Transform Trauma with AliveNHealthy Remote EMDR
Discover the transformative power of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) with our REmote EMDR program.
What is EMDR?
Are you new to using Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing / EMDR? If so, welcome to our Remote EMDR program!
EMDR is a powerful trauma-informed therapy that allows you to use the technology of the human body and simple eye movements to gain access to the autonomic nervous system. Normally, the autonomic nervous system operates unconsciously and beyond the control of the linguistic mind, but there are simple somatic exercises that a person can do to gain access to it.
EMDR eye movements mimic the movements that the eyes make when a person goes through a restorative Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep cycle. When the eyes move back and forth using EMDR, several powerful things happen to rebalance the autonomic nervous system and release trauma naturally:
- When the cranial nerves that feed the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system are constricted, our bodies cannot release stress or trauma. The movements of the eyes cause the eye muscles to pull gently on the cranial bones that make up the skull. The cranial bones are connected together by “sutures” or “joints” that move every-so-slightly when the eye muscles move back and forth. As the cranial bones are readjusted by this eye movement, the tiny holes in the skull bones through which the cranial nerves pass open fully so that pressure on the cranial nerves is relieved. This releases trauma and stress that is being stored in the autonomic nervous system.
- The left brain in most people is linguistic and logical while the right brain is creative, tangential, and symbolic. The left brain helps us construct a narrative of our daily experience, but when life is stressful or traumatic, things can get stuck in the emotional right brain. Trauma, by definition, involves a lack of linguistic narrative to describe powerful emotional experiences. Unfortunately, as humans, we don’t notice the lack of a meaningful narrative when we have powerful traumatic emotions stuck in the body. When the eyes move back and forth from left to right repetitively, the left brain and the right brain begin to communicate and emotions that are “stuck” can be matched up with the memories of events that were stressful or traumatic to us. When memories and emotions are properly matched and stitched together, we call this “integration”.
EMDR is a method that has been used for decades to release trauma. This is a type of therapy that makes it possible for people to use the body and the autonomic nervous system to overcome emotional issues, mood problems, issues in relationships, and mental health issues that would otherwise take years to overcome using mind-based talk therapy.
EMDR is easy to do and once you understand the process, you can use this program at home to address mental health issues, relationship problems, and more. If you are new to EMDR, consider scheduling an EMDR coaching session with us to get started .
Powerful, yet simple
EMDR leverages the natural mechanisms of your body and eye movements to tap into the autonomic nervous system, which usually operates beyond conscious control. By mimicking the eye movements of REM sleep, EMDR facilitates a gentle rebalancing of the autonomic nervous system, releasing stored trauma and stress. This process not only eases the cranial nerves but also fosters communication between the linguistic left brain and the emotional right brain, enabling the integration of memories and emotions. Embrace EMDR—a proven method for addressing deep-seated emotional issues and enhancing mental well-being, all through the technology of your own body.
